Kaomai Estate 1955: A Heritage Conservation Project

Kaomai Estate 1955 is an extension of Kaomai Lanna Resort, located in San Pa Tong, Chiang Mai. Once a thriving tobacco processing estate with 50 drying barns, the site—surrounded by decades-old trees—has been thoughtfully transformed to preserve its rich heritage.

Launched in 2016, the project revitalized the deserted area behind the resort, converting two tobacco barns into museums, repurposing a rare twin barn into a café, and creating an amphitheater for outdoor recreation. The historic lanes have been reimagined as an outdoor museum, featuring displays on tobacco barn architecture, plant species identification, and expert surveys documenting over 50 bird species. These elements offer visitors an immersive journey through the estate’s architectural and ecological heritage.

With a commitment to sustainable tourism, Kaomai Estate 1955 and its design team strive to conserve its remaining tobacco drying barns, ensuring they coexist harmoniously with the estate’s mature trees and diverse natural surroundings. Through heritage preservation and environmental education, the estate serves as a living testament to San Pa Tong’s cultural and natural legacy.
